Yoga from the Outside In...

What if there is a way of being that fundamentally changes your experience for the better?  What if you can exercise in a way that improves your mental clarity, reduces your stress, enhances your well-being, develops your awareness, boosts your energy, and still tones your tush?

These days, people begin a yoga practice for all sorts of reasons--stress reduction, weight loss, sleep restoration, pain management, injury rehabilitation, cross-training, personal growth, and more.  Yoga classes have even become the habitat du jour for singles seeking flexy, sexy dates and mates.  However, regardless of what initially attracts one to the mat, all who develop a genuine yoga practice embark on a life-long path of self-realization with benefits far-exceeding those originally sought.  With regular practice, one breathes more deeply, eats more lightly, sleeps more soundly, moves more fluidly, sees more clearly, speaks more freely, laughs more easily, loves more wholly, and lives more fully.

Although most yoga classes in the West emphasize the contemporary physical postures (asanas) and energetic breathing techniques (pranayama), these aspects of yoga are merely a starting point.  Yoga is a complete system of principles and practices that transforms one’s entire being.  Asana and pranayama are primarily aimed at developing a habit of attentive relaxation that supports meditative states by balancing the physical and energetic body.

Through simple poses and breathing practices, we learn to shift our attention from the external to the internal.  Through concentration and meditation practices, we learn how to be with ourselves and abide in the truth of who we are.  Finally, we learn to seamlessly navigate these inner and outer dimensions of experience as a holistic whole.

This ever-growing quality of attention that one develops on the mat is what transforms a series of postures into the genuine practice of yoga.  Despite its growing popularity as form of fitness, yoga is not merely exercise reserved for skinny, minny contortionists and modern-day members of the cult of the "body beautiful."  Nor is it an enlightenment fast-track for bendy, trendy spiritual seekers.  Yoga is not about being able to touch one’s nose to one’s knees, sculpting a beautiful body, or accumulating experiences of bliss, although all are common effects of asana practice.  Rather, yoga is about coming into harmony with ourselves, each other, and our world.

Come as you are.  Leave even betterThrough yoga, we break through habits of identity to simply rest in integrity.

“People are finally realizing how much lifestyle plays in illness and disease. 75% of all healthcare spending in the US can be attributed to unhealthy lifestyles. The cost of medical care and health insurance demands more attention on staying well, especially as more of the cost of healthcare is being shifted to employees and individuals.”

National Corporate Wellness

Companies that work well experience greater productivity, higher morale, better retention, and decreased healthcare costs with less absenteeism, fewer workforce injuries, and workers' compensation claims.  Employees who work well are more productive, innovative, and responsive.  They experience better energy, maintain greater focus, and make better decisions.  They deal with pressure, stress, and change more effectively.  Simply stated, healthy employees not only feel better, but they also work better.

Yoga is one of the oldest proven wellness programs on the planet, practiced for thousands of years by millions of people worldwide.  Yoga simultaneously rejuvenates and relaxes one's entire being, enhancing overall physical health, emotional well-being, and mental clarity.  Beneficial for all, yoga is especially beneficial for people under pressure to manage multiple commitments within tight deadlines dealing with constant interruptions, people who work long hours sitting at a desk, jet-lagged and travel-weary road warriors, as well as those who perform repetitive tasks.

Healthcare benefits designed to tend to people when they get sick are obviously commendable.  However, a far more visionary--and cost-effective--approach is to care for people's health by creating workplace conditions that are more likely to prevent people from becoming sick in the first place.  Offering people genuine opportunities to take care of themselves at work creates a culture of wellness that supports individual and organizational health and wealth.

Lumina Yoga at Work

Small group classes perfectly tailored to meet the needs of you, your colleagues, and/or your employees, offered at your place of business.  For just a nominal investment, you and your company can experience the benefits of working well together by bringing yoga to your workplace, choosing from one of three options:

  • Full subsidy : Employer offers the classes free of charge to the employee.
  • Partial subsidy : Class fee is shared by employee and employer.
  • Hosting : Employer offers a space in the office for the class time and employees individually pay for classes.

Yoga in the workplace makes it easy for people to participate and eliminates travel times to and from the yoga studio, as well as potential time lost to inevitable errands and extra stops.  Plus, you choose the time that works best for your schedules and professional commitments.

Yoga can be practiced practically anywhere--boardrooms, lunchrooms, offices, atriums, gymnasiums, airports, hotel rooms.  It’s wireless and portable.  All that’s really needed is you and/or your colleagues in a relatively quiet, comfortable room with open floor space —and of course, depending on how physical the practice, comfy clothing and mats.  Although most participants like to change into more comfortable clothing for class, participants can enjoy a yoga session in button-up shirts and slacks or jeans.

All classes are taught with the requirements of an office environment in mind and open to all levels of yoga experience.  Classes are offered in a course form of five to 10 weeks duration, held once weekly, bi-weekly or bi-monthly, depending on the availability of your space, as well as the time and resources of your company.

$75 per person for five up-to-90-minute sessions with a minimum class size of five people, or $150 per person for ten up-to-90-minute sessions with a minimum class size of five people.  Additional travel expenses may apply, depending on location.

Yoga Gatherings & Special Events

Customized yoga retreats or yoga sessions/presentations incorporated into other occasions: conferences, leadership retreats, team-building and social events, etc.  Fees for special events are negotiated based on location, duration, group size and needs.  Half-day or full-day workshops on various topics such as yoga philosophy, meditation, and therapeutic breathing can be scheduled upon request.
